If you love traveling, it's essential to be well-prepared before you set off.
An important part of that preparation is making sure you have the right vaccinations. After all, staying healthy during your trip is super important! So, are you heading to beautiful Southeast Asia? Then it’s good to know which shots you need to fully enjoy everything this stunning region has to offer without a worry.
1. DTP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Polio)
This is one vaccine I always make sure to check before I go on any trip. You only need one dose, and it protects you for ten years. Handy, right? Especially since in many Southeast Asian countries, you could be exposed to risky situations, like getting a small cut during a hike (or the infamous scooter accidents). After those ten years, you’ll need a booster, but that’s a small price to pay for such great protection.Cost: Around €30 - €45 per shot.
2. Hepatitis A
This shot is a must if you plan on enjoying the local cuisine (and trust me, you will want to in Southeast Asia!). The virus can be transmitted through contaminated food or water. After the first shot, you’ll be protected fairly quickly, and after a second dose (which you get 6-12 months later), you’re protected for up to 25 years, possibly even for life. So you can fully indulge in all the delicious food without worry!Cost: €50 - €75 per shot.
3. Hepatitis B
For longer trips, or if you might need medical treatment abroad, it’s smart to consider the Hepatitis B vaccine. After three shots over six months, you’ll be protected for life against this virus.Cost: Around €35 - €60 per shot (you’ll need 3 shots).
4. Typhoid
Planning to explore off-the-beaten-path rural areas? Typhoid is unfortunately still present in Southeast Asia, especially in places with poor hygiene. This vaccine protects you for three years. Not lifelong protection, but definitely long enough to keep you safe on your adventures.Cost: Between €30 and €50.
5. Yellow Fever
Are you traveling through a country where yellow fever is present before heading to Southeast Asia? Then this vaccine is mandatory! The good news is, you only need one shot, and you’ll be protected for life. Ideal!Cost: Around €45 - €60.
6. Rabies
If you’re like me and can’t pass by an animal without giving it a pet, you might want to consider the rabies vaccine. In remote areas where medical help might not be readily available, this protection can be essential. You’ll need three shots, and protection lasts 1 to 2 years. So if you’re planning to hike or work in an area full of animals, it’s a good precaution! And a little tip: try to pet as few animals as possible—haha.Cost: Around €60 - €90 per shot (3 shots needed).
7. Japanese Encephalitis
For the true adventurers who want to explore the countryside and rice fields (especially during the rainy season), the Japanese Encephalitis vaccine is highly recommended. It’s a rare but dangerous disease transmitted by mosquitoes. After two doses, you’ll be protected for 1-2 years. This might not be a shot you’d immediately think of, but it can make your trip a whole lot safer!Cost: Around €150 - €200 for the full vaccination (2 shots).
8. Tuberculosis (BCG)
For travelers who plan to stay in Southeast Asia for a longer period or work with vulnerable groups, the BCG vaccine against tuberculosis is something to consider. It offers lifelong protection, so if you plan to travel to high-risk areas regularly, it’s definitely worth thinking about.Cost: Around €30 - €80.
As you can see, it’s smart to do a quick vaccination check before your trip, especially if you’re looking for adventure. But once everything’s in place and you’re fully prepared, a world of beautiful temples, rice fields, and vibrant cities is waiting for you.
I hope this has helped you prepare for your next trip to beautiful Southeast Asia. With these vaccinations in mind, you’ll be able to enjoy everything the region has to offer with peace of mind!
